Dr. Gray's Hospital Elgin

The Fabric of our Communities

In these unusual and challenging times, we are delighted to have been able to support the hospital and primary care centres local to our Elgin mill, by supplying small batches of scrubs while they waited for NHS supplies.

A dedicated team of our craftspeople applied their sewing skills to produce these essential uniforms while maintaining the recommended social distancing guidelines. The group initially produced prototypes in ultra-fine merino cloth before standard poly-cotton cloth was delivered, and production could start. The first completed batch was sent to a local primary care centre last month.

Johnstons of Elgin's Chief Executive Simon Cotton explained, "We're extremely proud of our team of highly skilled sewers who have been able to produce scrubs using the equipment and facilities we have in our Elgin mill. We have strict measures in place to ensure the health and safety of our staff and communities, including social distancing at all times in the mill and frequent cleaning and disinfection procedures. I am very grateful for the team's spirit, skill and initiative during this time."

In addition to the uniforms made at our Elgin site, we donated fabric to a further initiative, led by Dr Hannah Renwick. A sewing group local to our Hawick mill made scrubs with patterns cut by Ronnie Templeman of Hawick Upholstery Services.

Our local communities have always been incredibly important to us, and our history with Elgin's Dr Gray's Hospital goes back over 200 years. We supplied the first blankets to the hospital when it opened in 1819, followed by pillow slips and sheets a month later. Last year, we celebrated our connection with the health facility by producing a line of scarves to help raise funds to refurbish the building's clocktower.

We are grateful for the ongoing hard work of our local care providers, as well as healthcare workers throughout the UK, especially during the Covid-19 crisis. We are proud to have supported our local hospital and primary care centres, especially at this time. In times like these, the fabric of our communities has never been more important.
