Luo Yang

Photographer

‘Photography is an art that requires certainty. Light, posture and emotion are all frozen the moment you press the shutter, recording eternal beauty and power.’

– Luo Yang.

Beijing-based Luo Yang is best known for her intimate portraits of inspirational females, including a decade-long series, ‘Girls’, depicting women from different backgrounds in contemporary China. As part of our Kindred Spirits series, Luo Yang shot a series of creatives with the theme ‘A Sense of Certainty’. We turned the camera on Luo and asked her about her craft.

When did you discover your passion for photography?

When I was about 17, I bought a very convenient instant film camera and I vaguely remember taking pictures of my old house and street. When I went to college, my first professional camera was lent to me by a friend, and I took pictures of my classmates. There are always a lot of emotions to express when you are young, and I released that energy through images.

What is the greatest challenge you have experienced in your career?

For me, every shoot and each person I shoot is a challenge. Every individual is a world, and shooting is a collision between me and that world. All I can do is treat them sincerely.

What do you admire about the women you photograph?

I appreciate the strength of women who can express their emotions in a real way, who are sensual and at the same time have raw power and infectious energy. I think being yourself and expressing yourself authentically is powerful.

Do you have a favourite Johnstons of Elgin piece from the shoot?

I like the cashmere sweaters I wore. From the second I touched them, I could feel the softness and warmth. It was like meeting with a loyal old friend in winter.
